Dante, the Miniature Poodle

Once again, we have been contacted about a Poodle in need. A Miniature Poodle was found in a rural area, taking refuge in a rusty, overturned barrel in a ditch along with a litter of unrelated puppies. A silver Poodle was found dead in the road. It was apparent that these dogs were dumped, just cast away, like unwanted trash.  Despite advertising these dogs, no one has come forward to claim them.

The family that took the surviving dogs in found homes for the puppies but no one wanted the Mini Poodle. He has a bad back leg. Another woman in the area, Angie, found out about this dog and contacted us. We have accepted Dante (as Angie has named him) into rescue. He will have surgery to repair his left, grade 4 medial patella luxation. His knee has been dislocated for so long, he requires surgery to repair it.  As soon as he is stabilized after his surgery, he will come to us for recuperation, rehab and eventually adoption. In the meantime, he is being emergency fostered by Angie and her husband.

We are asking for donations to help this special dog in need. The cost of his knee surgery will depend on the extent of the damage and needed repair. His surgeon has agreed to reduce the cost of the surgery, and will neuter him while he is under anesthesia at no additional charge. Since Dante is only 2 to 3 years old, he is expected to have an excellent outcome. Our vets here in Kentucky are aware of Dante and will provide all necessary follow-up.

Dante is a sweetheart of a boy. He has readily adjusted to his emergency foster home and the menagerie there. He was matted and dirty so Angie cleaned him up; removing mats and gave him a bath. He will have a full proper grooming after his initial recovery from surgery.  For now, he seems to be happy to be an inside dog with people that care about him.

POST OPERATIVE UPDATES:

Tuesday, March 28:  Dante tolerated his surgery yesterday very well.  However, the surgery to correct  his knee dislocation was not completely successful.  Dr. Bruketta found too much damage to be able to correct it.  He is contacting an orthopedic surgeon to see if there is anything else that can be done for Dante's knee.  If this is all that we can do for his knee, at least he will no longer be in pain when he touches his paw to the ground.

In the meantime, Dante is recuperating nicely with his emergency foster family.  He remains a very appreciative and sweet boy.

Dante, resting with his foster family after his knee surgery.  There was too  much damage to completely correct the injury to his knee. A close up of the healing wound from his surgery.  Dante will have limited use of his knee, but without the pain he had before his surgery.

Friday, March 31:  Dante continues to rest and recuperate.  He is not using his operative leg.  He does not seem to be in any pain.

We spoke to the orthopedic surgeon in Memphis.  He will see Dante on another three weeks, after he has healed from the surgery he had Monday.  We will know more at that time as to what is in store for Dante.

On Monday, April 3, Dante will be picked up by his Memphis foster Mom, Pam.  She will monitor his progress and take him to see the Memphis orthopedic surgeon surgeon later in the month.  Pam has been a long-time friend of rescue and West Kentucky Rescue.

Friday, April 21, 2006:  Dante has had his orthopedic evaluation.  He did and does not have an luxating patella.  He has a rare fracture of a part of his femur, actually in the knee joint.  We have been assured that although he only touches his paw to the floor or ground now and then, he is not apparently in severe pain. He is "sore."  Repair of this type of fracture is difficult at best and does not have a high rate of success.  It is also very expensive, starting at about $2,500.00.  He will have to return to the specialist in about two months, after he has had time for more complete healing from the first surgery.  At that time, we will try to decide if he should simply have his knee fused.  If his knee is fused, he will have a permanent limp, but should be pain free with very little limitation to getting around.  Fusion of his knee is a less costly resolution for his injury and may be the best solution for him anyway.

We are still in need of donations to cover just his expenses incurred so far.  The orthopedic evaluation, including new x-rays and the reduced exam fee came to  $206.00  Donation details are below.

Wednesday, June 14, 2006:  Dante was seen by Dr. Tobias in Memphis again today.  His leg has apparently healed as much as it can at this point.  He had a fractural malunion of the medial femoral condyle.  This means that he had a fracture of a portion of the femur (thigh bone) in his knee that did not heal correctly.  His original surgery was not effective in stabilizing this.  He also has an acl tear in his left knee and a loose knee cap (luxating patella).  It has been decided that surgery at this time to correct the problems with his knee would probably not improve his condition.  He does not appear to be in any pain or discomfort.  After much consideration and soul searching, we have decided that we will not subject Dante to further surgery.

All of this means that Dante has a gimp knee.  He does wonderfully getting around, does not appear to be limited in his ability to get around, jump up on the couch or bed for loving.  Dante is a loving boy that gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home.  He is house trained with a doggie door.

Dante is now ready for adoption!
